British Normandy Memorial

British Normandy Memorial

The memorial commemorates the D-Day landings and subsequent campaign to liberate Paris with 24,422 names inscribed on the memorial recognising the men and women who gave their lives under British Command. The classically detailed stone structures are designed to withstand the elements on the exposed site and stand as a solemn testament to the lost souls for generations to come.

We acted as civil and structural engineers and ran the construction contract, which was based on the FIDIC red book. Despite the global pandemic, the project was completed in October 2020, within budget and only 6 weeks behind the original programme. It won the FIDIC Contract of the Year Award 2021 (the International Federation of Consulting Engineers).

The Normandy Memorial Trust was formed in the UK with funding from HM Treasury’s Libor Fund and generous private donors. The project was an exemplar of pan-European collaboration with a team including an architect (Liam O’Connor), design consultants and quantity surveyor from the UK working alongside a French main contractor and landscape architect, whilst the stonework specialist was from Ireland; paving was by an Italian company and pergola timbers were provided by a company in Devon.
