BAFTA

We provided conservation advice to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for plans to refurbish their headquarters on Piccadilly in London.

The Grade II Listed building was constructed between 1881 and 1883 for the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and much of its volume contained large open gallery spaces with heavily-engineered roofs and floors. The building had been much altered in its relatively short lifespan, which has resulted in many of its original spaces being underused and becoming undervalued.

We worked with Benedetti Architects to advise on the potential of the building by advising them on the appropriate alterations to the complex existing structure and how the roof spaces can be converted to take advantage of the original ornate gallery rooflights, which have been blocked off for many years.

By improving facilities and doubling the building’s capacity, the redevelopment has enabled BAFTA to dramatically increase its charitable programme. 195 Piccadilly is now a creative centre for film, games and television and the central hub for BAFTA’s UK-wide, and global, learning and talentdevelopment programme. A world-leading independent arts charity, BAFTA works throughout theyear to find and promote the next generation of talent and to break down the barriers that can make it hard to build careers in the creative industries.
