Railway Electrification

Railway Electrification

As heritage advisors to Network Rail on a variety of electrification projects, including the Great Western, Midland Mainline and Trans Pennine, we have an unrivalled knowledge of the challenges of enabling the UK’s 19th century railway network to fulfil the demands placed on it in the 21st century.

In a partnership with Network Rail and Historic England, we undertook comprehensive listing reviews of the heritage assets along the routes, identifying those which were missed by earlier surveys. We then advised project teams on installing electrification equipment at dozen of listed stations, viaducts, bridges and tunnels. To help explain the complex technical requirements to the public and planning authorities, we produced a ‘layman’s guide’ to electrification in simple language. The most recent version, which has been produced in support of Scotland’s Railways rolling electrification programme, can be downloaded here.
