The concept of our design, which creates a vastly improved transport interchange with the underground, buses and taxis, is to cut a major swathe through the complex of brick vaults.
This provides a generous concourse at ground level below the tracks which adds considerably to the connectivity of the whole urban area. Our design also reconfigures the track and platform arrangement to accommodate the additional through lines required for Thameslink.
Our masterplan scheme, which gained planning and listed building consent, included a deck for a major commercial development over the station. We also explored other redevelopment schemes, including a simplified street-level concourse with platform canopies and roofs. This was the option taken forward by Network Rail.
