Following closure of the Corus Steelworks in Ebbw Vale in 2002 and preparation of a development framework we have taken forward the Masterplan and Design Codes for the regeneration of this 75 Ha brownfield site in South Wales.
The masterplan sets new standards in sustainability and urban design to make a significant contribution to Wales’ national sustainable development objectives. The plan includes a Learning Campus for post 16-year-old education and vocational training, a new 100 bed hospital, primary school, a large Wetland Park, theatre, leisure centre, offices and around 700 homes to benefit both the new and existing community. Key to our approach has been issues of connectivity – with a new rail link and Terminus station to Cardiff, a strategic bypass route, new access into the site and a landscaped set of steps with a funicular to connect the site to the town centre. Detailed design principles for streets, blocks and squares have been developed in the Design Codes to set specific and high quality standards.
