We were the structural engineers for this major project for Eton College, designed by John Simpson Architects. It provides two new teaching buildings of three storeys and a new ‘theatre’. This is modelled on an ancient Greek debating chamber.
The new theatre, a loadbearing masonry structure, seats up to 300 people and has been designed with high-performance acoustics to enhance the performance and prevent external noise penetration into the auditorium. High quality finishes have been used to both the auditorium and entrance lobby areas. The academic buildings are concrete framed with solid unjointed external masonry walls. Raised ground floor slabs, with voids below, allow flood water to flow under the building.
We also advised on vehicle movements and highways issues associated with the new development.
