New Library, Magdalen College, Oxford
We provided structural engineering and conservation support to Wright & Wright Architects on the repair and extension of the listed Grade II* New Library at Magdalen College to provide more archiving space and study areas to suit future needs.
The project involved dealing with complex ground conditions and archaeology, a fluctuating water table which is linked to the nearby rivers Thames and Cherwell, and restricted site access. Due to the significant archaeology present over the proposed footprint, an enabling works contract was carried out to cover the archaeological excavation and underpinning of the Grade II* listed wall along the site boundary to allow the new extension to be constructed.
