Iron Bridge, Shropshire

The Iron Bridge is a 100-foot (30 m) cast iron bridge that was built in 1779. the sturcture is now Grade I listed and is part of a World Heritage Site.

We were approached after initial investigations showed that the Iron Bridge was under threat from cracking due to stresses in the ironwork dating from the original construction, as well as ground movement over the centuries, and an earthquake in the 19th century.

In 2016 we gave structural engineering advice on repairs to the bridge, resulting in English Heritage beginning work to repair the bridge in 2017. The project was generously supported by the public through a crowdfunding campaign, including a €1 million donation from Germany's Hermann Reemtsma Foundation.

The £3.6 million investment by English Heritage included meticulous repairs to the bridge, including bespoke replacements for hundreds of iron wedges that hold the structure together.
