Metro West Liffey Bridge
Metro West Liffey Bridge
Working in collaboration with Aedas , our design for this 300m railway and pedestrian bridge achieves an elegant, simple, yet iconic structure that sits comfortably in the landscape and has the feeling of emerging from the trees then disappearing back into them.
The slender deck provides shelter for pedestrians and cyclists at high level, with no structural projections above. At low level a second bridge, hung below the main crossing, allows pedestrians to experience the water at first hand. It requires no extra structural support so it does not impinge on the landscape and sensitive ecology.
The pedestrian walkways are fully accessible for disabled users at both high and low level, and are connected to the south side at the valley top via a funicular railway and meandering footpath. There are long views to the west towards the centre of Dublin and of the open countryside to the north for the light rail passengers, pedestrians and cyclists crossing at high level.
