Palace of Westminster - St Stephen's Hall

Palace of Westminster - St Stephen's Hall

We acted as structural engineers for vital work to clean and repair the ceiling of the historic St Stephen’s Hall in the heart of the Houses of Parliament. Our involvement related to the repair of cracking and decorative stone elements that had become loose, where differential settlement had occurred.

St Stephen’s Chapel (as it was formerly known) was arguably England’s single most important medieval building, not least as a result of its exceptional influence on English Architecture, but also by its marked impact on the arrangement of our modern political system following its use as a permanent debating chamber for 300 years.

The work was undertaken in collaboration with Donald Insall Associates, DBR Ltd and the Palace of Westminster’s in-house team of conservation architects and its Heritage Collections team. The work was part of a wider programme of works in which we were involved, which focused on the repair and replacement of building fabric and mechanical and electrical systems in the Palace of Westminster.

Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle said:
“St Stephen’s Hall is such an important part of our parliamentary history - so I am delighted that it has been refurbished to its former glory for all those who work here or visit to enjoy once again.”
