Putney Pier

Putney Pier

As conservation advisors, we supported proposals for a new riverboat pier of bespoke design to sit alongside the Grade II Putney Bridge and the new Putney Embankment Foreshore, within the Putney Embankment Conservation Area.

The project was of strategic importance for London’s riverboat service, as Putney pier has long been the busiest station on the Thames Clipper network. The project will provide a new fully accessible river pier comprised of a two dolphin piles, a fixed bridge, canting brow, bank seat and pontoon, alongside landside works including the integration of the fixed bridge to the new Thames Tideway Structure.

Working alongside Beckett Rankine and Rolfe Judd Planning for Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, we ensured that the design of the pier was sensitive, with a sweeping form that follows the rise of the bridge approach on Lower Richmond Road, as well as the pontoon shelter which was designed to sensitively respond to the arches of Putney Bridge. As a result, we argued that the structure would sit comfortably within its surroundings and would contribute positively to the Putney Embankment Conservation Area. The structure was granted planning permission by both the Royal Borough of Richmond and the London Borough of Wandsworth in March 2023.
