RAF Halton

RAF Halton

With decommissioning planned for 2027, the RAF base at Halton, near Wendover is allocated for 1000 homes in the Aylesbury Vale Local Plan.

The area was formerly part of the Rothschild’s Halton House estate, before being given to the armed forces in the 20th century to provide training facilities for the RAF. The site has a striking landscape setting, being located at the foot of a wooded escarpment forming part of the Chilterns AONB, with the upper part of the site affording long views across the Vale of Aylesbury. Early barracks and parade ground are listed and are to be retained, while other aspects of the site’s military heritage are to be reflected in the site’s redevelopment.

We are working closely with local stakeholders including Halton Parish Council who are keen to see the site form part of Halton Village and deliver community facilities including sports pitches and a primary school for use by new and existing residents.

We provided urban design, transport and heritage as part of the team lead by HYAS, for Buckinghamshire Council. The project delivered a masterplan that showed how the site will evolve into a new residential neighbourhood of 1000 homes with a new local centre and 50% green infrastructure, in a manner which retains and incorporates the site's important RAF and Rothschild heritage.

Our SPD design guidance will form a material consideration in the determination of future planning applications and was subject to consultation January-March 2024.
