The Goldsmiths' Centre
The Goldsmiths' Centre
Located within the Clerkenwell Conservation Area, the Clerkenwell Archaeological Priority Area and the Clerkenwell/Smithfield Special Policy Area, the creation of this £15m, 2,400m2, educational training centre involved refurbishing and restoring a Grade II listed, Victorian school building, and constructing a new five-storey (with basement) workshop and studio building alongside it. A new glazed covered courtyard links the two buildings. There’s also a gallery, which can be extended into the atrium, and a café on the ground floor that spills out on to a terrace.
We advised on the redevelopment of the former school as conservation advisors, working closely with the architects to secure a new future as a centre for learning and exhbition. As structural engineers, we took the design up to tender stage as part of a Design and Build procurement process. The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and combined photo-voltaic cells and air-source heat pumps to minimise energy usage, whilst using rainwater harvesting for grey water.
In 2023, we were asked to advise on a new package of work that improvied the security and wayfinding within the building’s reception.
