The Warren House, Epping Forest

The Warren House, Epping Forest

We produced a Conservation Management Plan to help the City of London find a successful new use for this historic building and landscape.

The Warren House is a Grade II* listed building standing in extensive grounds within Epping Forest. It began as a Tudor ‘hunt standing’ before becoming an eighteenth-century inn and then a Regency villa. Between 1876 and 2001 it was occupied by the Superintendent of Epping Forest, but it is now used only occasionally. The site is highly significant as a very rare building type and as the work of renowned landscape architect, Humphry Repton. However, the site is poorly understood and its full potential has not been realised.

To help find a suitable new use for the building and grounds, we were commissioned to prepare a Conservation Management Plan, working with consultants Historic Landscapes, and commissioning a dendrochrological assessment of the historic timbers. Our CMP has contributed to a better understanding of the building and has identified policies which will help balance the essence of the Warren – a secluded building inextricably linked with the forest – with the desire to bring the building and gardens into a viable new use, with ease of access for all.
