Cara has a wide-ranging experience of working on complex refurbishment and new-build projects. Her work on new-build projects includes energy centres, university buildings, and residential housing. On sensitive historic sites, she has worked on many extensive alterations to listed institutional buildings, museums, and leisure centres.
Her engineering experience spans all stages of design and construction, covering strategic masterplanning and feasibility, detailed design through to delivering projects on site. A particular focus of her work is on the sustainable refurbishment and upgrade of historic buildings to meet the needs of today.
Cara has supported the British Museum for over two years on projects ranging from temporary exhibitions and fit-outs to repairs and refurbishment of Grade I listed buildings. She is a key member of the team delivering a major decarbonisation project, currently on site, which involves the construction of a new six-storey Energy Centre within the highly constrained British Museum estate, paving the way to net zero. Sensitive intervention to Grade I listed fabric will accommodate new services infrastructure across the complex estate. A phased delivery strategy has been developed to minimise the impact on the museum.
For the University of Greenwich, Cara has supported our design work on Devonport House through an approach of carefully set-out investigations to a Grade II listed nurse’s home to build our understanding of the existing structure. Along with an appreciation of historic construction techniques, this has informed our proposals for essential structural repairs, and alterations to incorporate new plant equipment within the existing building.
Her work at the British Museum and University of Greenwich has given her a thorough understanding of the challenges of working within operationally complex, live environment and how to account for this in her designs
