Balham Town Centre

Balham Town Centre

We worked with Metropolitan Workshop to design and deliver high quality public realm improvements to a number of key spaces in Balham town centre in south-west London.

The work was supported by the Mayor’s Outer London Fund (Round 2), with schemes including new faience tiling abutments and shop fronts below the railway bridge on Balham High Road, resurfacing and decluttering to Hildreth Street with its marketplace and burgeoning café scene, installing a bold new public artwork on an exposed “Ugly Wall”, and enlivening the community space on Bedford Hill with a new café kiosk, lighting and seating.

Our role focused on providing transport and engineering support to the design team, which included helping to develop the initial scheme concepts, engaging with the public and other stakeholders, developing a simplified traffic management approach for Hildreth Street and resolving engineering details such as pavement build-ups, drainage and structural solutions for the new elements of cladding.
