Bankside Studios at 76-80 Southwark Street
In the late 1990s we acted as structural engineers for the redevelopment of two very different buildings – one dating from c.1900 and of traditional warehouse construction, the other dating from the 1970s and of steel framed construction with reinforced pre-cast beam and block floors. Our work with architects CZWG united these buildings to create new office space through the addition of an extra storey and a seven-storey plant tower at the rear as well as a new masonry lift shaft. The additional storey has front slanting columns which lean out over the street 2.5 metres.
We are now working on proposals by the building’s current owner to remove the upper storey and to add two new storeys in its place, as well as a complete refurbishment of the rest of the building to upgrade the office spaces with new circulation routes and replacement of the entire services system.
