Bradford Cathedral

Bradford Cathedral

The medieval parish church which in 1919 became Bradford Cathedral was extended in the late 1950s by Sir Edward Maufe to meet the demands of its elevated status. We were commissioned to write a Conservation Management Plan for the Grade I listed building and its precinct, with a grant from English Heritage.

The Plan focused in particular on assessing the significance of Maufe’s subtle and well-preserved scheme, and on considering – in collaboration with members of our Urbanism team – means to improve access to the precinct and the cathedral.

The building occupies an elevated site on top of an 8m-high retaining wall, with steep steps down towards the city centre. Our Plan informed decisions about the future of this important place of worship, and will contribute to wider discussions about the physical and cultural place of the cathedral within the ambitious city centre regeneration projects that surround it.
