We undertook a major refurbishment of Maple House - upgrading a dated and unattractive 1960s office building that had once served as a carpet warehouse into a modern open-plan office space.

The site is located at the junction of City Road and Epworth Street, just south of the Old Street roundabout and adjoins the Grade-I listed John Wesley’s house and chapel, as well as the highly significant listed building of the Methodist church complex around it. The site is also within the Bunhill Fields and Finsbury Square Conservation Area of the London Borough of Islington.

Working with architects Buckley Gray Yeoman, we acted as structural engineers. The works were designed so that much of the existing structural frame was retained, and included cutting away part of the ground floor to bring natural light into the basement below. Additionally, we added an extra storey, a new courtyard extension and several internal alterations - adding a total of 15,000 sqft to the building.

The project went on to win a AJ Retrofit Award and a Schueco Award.
