Chatham House, Rochester

Chatham House, Rochester

This Grade II* listed brick house in Rochester was formerly a brewery and latterly a furniture depository. Dating from 1730, it was re-fronted in the early 19th century and then in the 20th century underwent alterations with a single-storey shop constructed along its front elevation.

We were asked to advise on repairs following the removal of the ground-floor shop and the refurbishment of the main house and the brewery buildings to the rear to bring them back into public use.

The project to restore Chatham House was part of a wider project with neighbouring buildings that were granted HSHAZ funding by Historic England. The aim has been to regenerate the conservation area through a combination of capital works and community-driven projects including cultural activities that enhance awareness of the area’s heritage and to establish a hub for local independent businesses and creative industries. Accordingly, the prospective tenants at Chatham House will be arts or cultural organisations which work with the community.
