Cherwell Design Guide

Alan Baxter collaborated with Cherwell’s Planning and Design Officers to prepare a Design Guide SPD to support the Council’s commitment to promoting exemplary standards of design across the District.

The district of Cherwell, located in North Oxfordshire, is known for its distinctive picturesque villages and market town centres. These places have a strong character rooted in the local landscape and underlying geology. However, in common with many places across England, more recent development is often dominated by standard house types and highways-led solutions and ‘could be anywhere’.

The unprecedented scale of growth planned in Cherwell over the coming decades presents a huge opportunity to raise standards. Each chapter of the Design Guide deals with a different part of the design process, from site analysis and masterplanning to architectural detailing and materials. The document is highly visual with a mixture of plans, sketches, cartoons and photographs to illustrate the guidance.
