China Wharf

China Wharf

Situated in Bermondsey between New Concordia and Reeds B Wharves, this block of 17 apartments straddles the river wall with a supporting ‘Art Deco’ front elevation on piles driven into the river bed.

A scalloped wall is used to twist windows, both towards the rising sun and away from the neighbours directly across the courtyard. It also restores the missing scale of industrial buildings, such as silo. The river façade has a central solid plate with flanged curves which divide up the large areas of glass and visually support the balconies.

Awards:

The building won a Civic Trust Award and RIBA award and in 2018 was Grade II Listed by Historic England.
