Clerkenwell Fire Station

Clerkenwell Fire Station

We provided conservation and engineering advice to bring new life to the imposing former Clerkenwell Fire Station, a large Grade II complex that occupies a key position on the corner of Farringdon Road and Rosebery Avenue. The building was the oldest working fire station in the UK until its closure in 2014.

The fire station is one of an impressive group built by the London County Council in the period 1889-1914. At the rear is the former drill tower and exercise yard, with basement car park. After the Fire Station closed down, it was granted Asset of Community Value status. A Planning Brief was prepared by the London Borough of Islington setting out how future development can meet the Council’s policies, including provision of affordable housing.

We were appointed to demonstrate how the Planning Brief can be translated into an architectural scheme. We undertook a structural and heritage analysis of the site and appointed Ian Chalk Architects to produce four design options for the client to consider. We then continued to advise the client about the future use of the site.
