Derriford Hospital Multi-Storey Car Park, Plymouth

As the key part of the overall masterplan for this site, a large area of surface-level car parking was consolidated into a 600-space, seven-storey car park.

Working alongside architects Studio Woodroffe Papa as structural engineers, our brief was to reduce hospital parking across the site to release further land for development; improve patients’ and staff’s arrival experience with a visitor hub – services, amenities and secure parking – for the 11,000 staff, patients and visitors that use the hospital daily.

The car park building also includes retail and office space, and the capacity to house new medical facilities in a future two storey extension to the roof, which currently houses a green roof and photovoltaic cells.

The structure is exposed reinforced concrete flat slabs, on pad foundations bearing onto the local Plymouth slate. The scheme includes an engaging and non-uniform frontage, to the car park as well as the office and retail areas, which integrates the structure into it as a feature. The ramped floor plates lead to an efficient car parking arrangement, and help to create an attractive and eye-catching elevation through the open façade.

The project was the first phase of the 6.5ha North West Quadrant, a mixed-use development integrating the future healthcare needs for the adjacent Derriford Hospital with residential and retail.
