High Streets Heritage Action Zones
High Streets Heritage Action Zones
In 2019, Historic England announced 68 historic high streets that were to benefit from government funding as part of the Heritage Actions Zones (HAZ) programme, to fuel economic, social and cultural recovery.
We assisted Historic England in reviewing the listed building stock within the High Street HAZs in two regions: London and the South East, and the Midlands. The aim is to verify that the designated heritage assets are correctly described on the National Heritage List to HE’s modern standards and to identify any other heritage assets worthy of statutory protection.
We initially carried out a high-level survey of the list entries for the listed buildings, scheduled monuments and registered parks within each of the High Street HAZs – a total of over 400 – to identify the extent of intervention required to bring each list entry up to the current standards.
Having identified the entries in need of considerable revision or rewriting, we are now in the process of re-assessing the designated heritage assets to produce enhanced list entries that accurately describe each building’s historical development and current state. These enhanced list entries will help guide the future implementation of projects funded through the HAZ programme.
