Greenhouse Sports, Westminster
Our engineers advised on the restoration and refurbishment of this important community hub and Grade II* listed building.
Dating to 1822, the church had been made redundant before being brought back to life and transformed into a centre for young people, providing free sport, trusted mentors and a space for the local community.
We were first appointed to assess the condition of the pitched and flat roofs, external masonry façades, bell tower, and plant deck, identifying defects and recommending remedial works.
We identified that the building had undergone several structural alterations, including gallery removals and reinstatements, installation of steel structures, and roof repairs. The pitched roof over the main hall comprises timber kingpost trusses, many of which showed signs of historical water ingress, timber decay, and joint separation.
We advised on a series of targeted remedial works that were essential to prevent further deterioration. We worked alongside timber and stone specialists to inform detailed repair designs and improve the building’s long-term integrity.
We then advised on the main programme of refurbishment works over a five-year programme. This included upgrading partitions and doors in the crypt to create new breakout spaces and welfare areas, as well as structural repairs to the ground floor void and the replacement of the northwest roof covering. Key improvements also included a new sports floor, reception, and table tennis store.
The project was one of just two organisations in London to receive support through a national funding announcement from Historic England and DCMS.
