Kensal Green Cemetery

Kensal Green Cemetery

Kensal Green Cemetery was the first of the ‘magnificent seven’ cemeteries in London to be created in the mid-nineteenth century. It became a fashionable resting place for the aristocracy after two royal burials and many notable Victorians are buried there including Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Anthony Trollope and William Makepeace Thackeray.

We were commissioned by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to produce an Historic Landscape Assessment for the Cemetery. This document will inform and support a forthcoming supplementary planning document which will guide development in the adjacent Kensal Canalside Opportunity Area.

We analysed the history and significance of the Cemetery, with a particular focus on the contribution of its setting and views, before setting out high-level guidance in terms of form, massing and materials for the adjacent development.
