Kennington Oval
Kennington Oval
The London Borough of Lambeth is seeking to reimagine the streets around the Oval cricket ground in Kennington based on principles from their ambitious Kerbside Strategy and Climate Action Plan, and the London-wide Healthy Streets approach. For this, they have partnered with the Surrey County Cricket Club, a key local stakeholder, who share the council’s aspirations for making the neighbourhood healthier, more liveable and enjoyable for residents, local school children and cricket fans alike.
We were engaged as transport consultants on the project together with Churchman Thornhill Finch as landscape architects and Streets Reimagined as engagement specialists. In an initial phase the team, working closely with school children, community groups and key stakeholders, developed a year-long trial scheme to test road closures and populate the public realm with temporary street furniture, planting and public art. This is coordinated with SCCC’s match day requirements for access and crowd-control.
We also designed the trial traffic management and parking arrangements to integrate with two planned School Streets within the study area.
The trial scheme will be monitored and finetuned throughout its run and eventually inform the development of a permanent scheme for more wholesale changes to the street design.
