Kentish Town Sports Centre

The Grade II listed Kentish Town Sports Centre forms an imposing and much loved landmark in the neighbourhood. It was built in 1901 as a wash house and slipper baths with four pools. Some important historical and architectural features remain, such as the elevations and a barrelled trussed timber roof over the original men’s first class swimming bath, a design considered unique for its time and intended to limit ‘splashing echo’.

In 2016 the building underwent an extensive refurbishment combined with a partial rebuild, for which we acted as both structural engineers and conservation advisers.

The northern section of the site was demolished and a new RC-framed changing and gym complex has been erected in its place. Two of the existing pools were rebuilt in water-retaining concrete and a new first floor was erected over the Grafton pool to provide additional gym space. This ambitious project was delivered on time and on budget, a credit to the team involved and in particular to the client, Camden Council.
