Lloyd's Register, 71 Fenchurch Street
Lloyd’s Register of Shipping has been based at 71 Fenchurch Street since 1901, following the completion of the Collcutt Building (now Grade II* listed). The building is recognised for its fine sculpture and the site was significantly expanded in 2000 with a large 14-storey extension designed by RSHP.
Lloyd’s wished to separate the Collcutt and RSHP-designed buildings. We were engaged as heritage consultants to give strategic advice on how to separate the Rogers building from the original building, taking into account the listed status of the site and a new strategy for servicing.
We then advised on the conservation aspects of an internal refurbishment; a new 8-storey extension on the site; and rooftop additions on the Colcutt building.
Based on our research and assessment, we collaborated with AOC Architecture to refine key elements of the scheme, including a refurbishment of the 6500m2 office spaces to support modern methods of working in historic rooms across five accommodation floors, as well as the creation of a new library that would help showcase the Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s global research activities and provide a new home for their Heritage Education Centre.
The refurbishment included protecting the building’s historic fabric, unique sculptures and artworks, and restoring the original chandeliers. We took part in pre-application discussions with the City of London to support the team in evolving the final scheme.
