Paddington Station
Over three decades we have provided conservation, engineering and movement advice on multiple projects for the successful modernisation of Paddington Station.
As the terminus of Brunel’s Great Western Railway, Paddington is among the most important historic railway stations in the world. Extended and altered, it retains its key role in the railway network and a strong sense of identity, listed at Grade I.
Our involvement began by initially considering the future of Span 4 (part of the historic trainshed). Since then, we have been engaged on numerous projects, including, as part of Crossrail, conservation advice for the complex project to provide an expanded Hammersmith & City Line Station and taxi rank. This work followed on from the Parliamentary process in anticipation of the construction of the Elizabeth Line which involved drafting the Heritage Deed for the station.
Our conservation and engineering teams then prepared a Conservation Strategy and Development Framework and, with Weston Williamson + Partners, wrote a masterplan for the whole station and secured consent for development of the so called ‘Bomb Gap’ site.
More recently, we have worked as engineers and conservation advisers on a number of enhancement projects for Network Rail around the station. These include retail facilities and advertising within the historic station complex and input to the Retail Tenant Design Guide.
Presently, we are collaborating once again with Weston Williamson + Partners on a refresh of the masterplan, ten years on, which reflects the great changes that have taken place with the opening of the Elizabeth Line and the regeneration of Paddington Basin.
