Private Estate, Wiltshire
We are currently working on a large private country estate in Wiltshire. The main Grade I listed house, part of which dates from the 1720s, has been much altered and extended. It sits in open parkland with an extensive walled garden and a number of separately listed buildings. In 2019, the Estate was acquired by a Private Client.
Furthermore, our work extended to Grade II* Listed Stable Block, which was in a severely vulnerable condition and had partially collapsed. The clock tower and sections of the roof had collapsed and the building is on the Historic England Buildings at Risk register.
Our Heritage team prepared a number of reports on the condition of the stable block, an emergency action plan and a sequence of works in order to stabilise and protect the structure. We then worked with a Conservation Architect and timber specialist to retain and repair as much of the historic masonry and timber floors and roof as possible and reconstruct the clock tower in order to bring the building back into use as a stable with groom and guest accommodation on the upper level.
Our Engineering team developed a sequence of works to initially stabilise and then begin to repair the structure. This involved employing specialist techniques like abseiling and robotics to install temporary propping and to remove debris, as conventional access was not safe. We are now designing a scheme of permanent repairs and alterations to provide a working stable and high-quality guest accommodation.
