Royal Academy of Arts - Schools

Following the award-winning £56 million expansion and redevelopment of the RA in 2018, which unified the existing site in Burlington House with 6 Burlington Gardens, our work at the RA has continued as engineers for the overhaul of the famous art school building.

Working in collaboration with David Chipperfield Architects and Julian Harrap Architects, the refurbishment, reorganisation and improvement of the school campus involves the relocation of the school’s workshops from Burlington House to the basement of 6 Burlington Gardens. This will open up space within the existing building and is the first significant refurbishment of the Royal Academy Schools institution since its integration into the building in 1868.

The reconfigured Schools campus will be arranged around the landscaped Lovelace Courtyard, taking advantage of newly available space created by the first phase of works, as well as re-using and restoring the historic fabric. The project will provide the Royal Academy Schools with fully accessible and operationally functional spaces and will improve the quality of the existing studios and canteen, as well as providing a new suite of professional specialist workshops and a new library.

We acted as engineers for the design and development of the project and following the appointment of a contractor in 2023 we retained involvement in the project in a monitoring role on behalf of the client.
