Royal London Hospital

We were appointed to undertake a Heritage Assessment of the Royal London Hospital site on behalf of Barts Health NHS Trust.

Our report addressed the challenges of the Royal London Hospital site: analysing heritage issues, opportunities for interventions to former medical buildings, potential public realm and an overview of how the site could be sensitively, subsequently redeveloped by a team led by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

The success of this £125m transformation of the former Hospital into a new town hall for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets is partly the result of our initial conservation work, which considered the hospital’s landmark Front Block building (listed Grade II) as well as the lesser known but important Outpatients and Outpatients Annex buildings.

“The transformation of the Royal London hospital into an elegant seat of local government is a sleek operation that has retained the 18th-century building’s original aura and poise” - Rowan Moore, writing in The Observer
