Royal Opera House

Our ongoing involvement with the Grade I listed Royal Opera House in Covent Garden has extended for over 25 years.

We worked alongside Dixon Jones and BDP on the £140m, eight-year redevelopment to radically renovate and reconfigure the Opera House to create performance and auditoria spaces of a world-class standard. Completed in 1999, we advised on various proposals to detailed planning

stage, including a new fly tower and a four square stage, the construction of a new grand foyer and the refurbishment of the auditorium.

In recent years, we produced a Conservation Plan for the site which set out the history and significance with policies that will help to balance the needs of the building with those of visitors and performers, whilst offering clear guidance on how to plan for the future.

The Plan was used to inform how the Royal Opera House would manage the historic core of the site once the award-winning, £51m ‘Open Up’ redevelopment project was complete. This creates a welcoming and inclusive cultural and social hub by opening up the historic building to the surrounding streetscape.

Most recently, we have been providing conservation advice on repairs to the back-of-house areas. This has included providing support towards an enhanced listing description, to provide greater clarity and certainty over future changes.
