Shafto Mews Houses

These two adjacent mews buildings are located within a conservation area just off Sloane Street, Knightsbridge.

We advised on their extensive redevelopment to create two high quality houses for the Cadogan Estate.

The scheme, led by Garnett + Partners, involved a façade retention of the superstructure, plus the construction of a new basement under the entire footprint of the two buildings. The majority of the roof structure had to be replaced due to poorly conceived alterations carried out in the 1970s.

The building was underpinned to form the basement, and the party wall was removed and rebuilt to provide more room during the basement construction as the site was small and highly constrained. The ground floor was designed as a transfer structure to create a generous open-plan space in the new basement, and to enable the superstructure to be constructed in parallel with the basement construction, giving a cost and programme saving.
