Sevenoaks Conservation Areas
Sevenoaks Conservation Areas
We were commissioned to revise and update appraisals for six village conservation areas in the Sevenoaks district of Kent. The selected areas were those with the oldest existing appraisals and the greatest pressure for development. The district council was keen to have new appraisals that were more concise and analytical and made use of GIS mapping, in line with Historic England best practice.
Our appraisals identify potential additions to the conservation areas, distinct Character Zones with the area, important views and the contribution to the character of the conservation area made by open spaces. This data has all been mapped in GIS and at the end of the project will be exported to the council for use by their planning department. The appraisals also contain management recommendations including targeted Article 4 directions in some conservation areas to address specific threats.
We then carried out public consultation during the drafting stage and then again after the drafts were published. The draft appraisals were made available for consultation on the council’s website with interactive maps, enabling users to select the data they wanted to show from a set of prepared layers.
You can read our existing CAAs online for Brasted, Leigh, Seal, Shoreham and Swanley.
In 2023, we returned to Sevenoaks once again to revise and update the appraisals.
