The Courtauld Institute of Art (Phase 2)

The Courtauld Institute of Art - Courtauld Connects (Phase 2)

We have worked closely with The Courtauld on a long-running refurbishment and redevelopment programme at their property within Somerset House’s Strand Block – a Grade I building completed in 1780 by Sir William Chambers and one of the most accomplished Palladian buildings in England.

The first phase of the project (entitled ‘Courtauld Connects’, and which was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize and won the Peoples’ Poll) focused on refurbishing the public galleries and improving visitor facilities. The second phase will address the institution’s academic, research, and community infrastructure, seeking to renew and expand the spaces that underpin The Courtauld’s dual role as a university and a centre for art historical research.

The principal focus is the renovation of the East Wing of Somerset House, which houses The Courtauld’s academic departments, library, and study spaces, many of which have remained largely unchanged for decades. The redevelopment will create modern teaching rooms, seminar and study areas, and enhanced research environments equipped for digital scholarship and conservation training. Upgrades to environmental controls, accessibility, and circulation will ensure the facilities meet contemporary standards while respecting the historic character of the Grade I listed building.

A major element of the works is the renewal of the vaulted library spaces, which form a distinctive part of the East Wing’s historic fabric. The project will improve access and functionality, providing students, researchers, and visiting scholars with an expanded and better-equipped library and archive. Alongside the academic improvements, Phase 2 will introduce new social and support facilities, creating a more cohesive and inclusive setting for staff and students.

We have continued in our roles as heritage consultants for the works, which, when complete, will enable The Courtauld to strengthen its role as an open educational and cultural institution.
