The Longwall Library at Magdalen College, Oxford
We provided structural engineering and conservation input, as well as strategic archaeological advice on the repair, preservation and major extension of the listed Grade II* Longwall Library at Magdalen College.
The project sought to provide more archiving space and study areas to suit future needs. The Buckler Building, a former Victorian school, which was itself transformed in the early 1930s to accommodate the College’s original library, was gutted and remodelled, with the addition of a freestanding, three-storey steel frame structure, with timber floors, and a lowered basement to generate significantly more space for the College. Previously, there were just 48 study places; now there are 120 in various settings, from an intimate attic floor tucked under the ornate Victorian roof structure to rows of window seats.
The scheme also included a new reinforced concrete L-shaped single-storey building that extends into the quad, containing staff offices and a reading room. This involved excavation to construct the new extension, which is sunken into the garden to be concealed by the listed building wall, while other areas of the quad have been regraded.
The project involved dealing with complex ground conditions and archaeology, a fluctuating water table which is linked to the nearby Rivers Thames and Cherwell, and restricted site access. Due to the significant archaeology present over the proposed footprint, an enabling works contract was carried out to cover the archaeological excavation and underpinning of the Grade II* listed wall along the site boundary to allow the new extension to be constructed.
The project went on to win a RIBA National Award and an RIBA South Conservation Award.
