The Taylor Library at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge
The Taylor Library serves as the principal lending library at Corpus Christi College and is open to all members of the College, including undergraduates, postgraduates, staff and Fellows. The collection currently contains over 43,000 volumes and spans the full range of courses studied at Corpus.
The College is one of the oldest in Cambridge and is centrally located, occupying an entire block of the historic city. Working with Wright & Wright as structural engineers, we transformed a former bank hall into a modern library, with a new court created alongside the library which now provides offices, accommodation, a bar and brand new student centre. Listed buildings were carefully restored and new ones finely detailed, with the use of high-quality long-life materials. The importance of some of the existing buildings, the constrained space and the need to minimise the disturbance during construction to allow the college to carry on with its normal life, made this a complex and challenging project.
