University College London

UCL’s core campus is centred on the College’s original Greek Revival building, designed by William Wilkins, and the main quadrangle – both of which are Grade I listed. The site contains other listed buildings and is in a Conservation Area.

All are intensively used and under constant pressure to adapt to new requirements, but virtually every project requires UCL to gain listed building or Conservation Area consent from Camden Council.

In 2003, to smooth the process of gaining these consents, we produced Management Guidelines, which identified areas of particular heritage significance, and set out agreed policies for the planning and carrying out of new works.

Subsequently, we worked on a number of individual UCL projects, including a new staircase for the Library, alterations to the Slade School and reconfiguration of listed houses on Gordon Square and Torrington Place. We also gave conservation advice on proposals to improve disability access and teaching facilities.
