University of Brighton - Three sites in Eastbourne, East Sussex
We produced three Heritage Statements on behalf of the University of Brighton that assessed proposals regarding three sites in Eastbourne, East Sussex: the Welkin Campus, Hillbrow site and Queenwood site. These were in response to the University’s planned vacation of these sites, with plans prepared to convert the sites into residential use.
The Welkin Campus site included two Grade II listed buildings: the Trevin Towers and its stable block on the site, as well as falling within the Meads Conservation Area. The campus additionally contains various unlisted buildings, including the late-Victorian villas of The Welkin and Bishopsbourne, in addition to twentieth- and twenty-first-century educational buildings. The Queenwood site contained an unlisted early-twentieth-century school building with post-war extensions which contained classrooms, a gymnasium, and a library, whilst the Hillbrow site contained an unlisted late-nineteenth-century school building which had largely been dominated by large, later twentieth-century extensions.
For each heritage statement, we concluded that the proposals for the conversion of each site into residential sites by Brooks Murray Architects would largely preserve the character and appearance of the Meads Conservation Area and any minor harm affecting any listed buildings would be outweighed by heritage benefits within each proposal.
