York Central Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal

York Central Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal

We provided integrated urban design and conservation expertise to York City Council to prepare a detailed appraisal of the city centre conservation area.

York is world renowned as an attractive and historic city attracting millions of visitors a year. The historic core conservation area covers around 35 ha and includes major heritage and cultural landmarks such as York Minster, the medieval Shambles, and City Walls and Bars - the most complete surviving medieval walls in the country.

But York is looking to the future with plans for significant redevelopment at the edge of the city centre bringing opportunities and challenges for conservation. Our study responds to the urgent need to properly understand the special characteristics of York to ensure they can be enhanced and protected from gradual erosion or major change.

The appraisal study identifies and describes 24 distinctive character areas, set within the wider context of the city and its regional and historic landscape. It provides management guidance based on an analysis of current threats and opportunities, drawing on our experience working in historic cities throughout Britain. It was developed in close partnership with York City Council and English Heritage and provided a key component of the local development framework evidence base.
