Bethan has experience in the assessment and adaptation of existing buildings and her work combines an understanding of structural behaviour with the preparation of drawings and technical information to support our projects.

Much of her work has been focused on the major refurbishment, restoration and extension of Tottenham House, a Grade I listed country house in Wiltshire. The present building dates largely from the early nineteenth century and incorporates elements of earlier houses. Its restoration and refurbishment involve the careful repair of historic fabric alongside alterations and additions to support its continued use.

The wider scheme encompasses the main house, historic stables and other estate buildings. This provides a setting in which engineering proposals - developed by Bethan and our team - must respond to different forms of historic construction techniques, changes made over time and the heritage significance of individual building elements.

The project illustrates the importance of establishing how structures were built and how they behave before determining appropriate interventions. It also highlights the need to consider existing materials and connections when integrating new work.

Working on a complex refurbishment project provides exposure to the coordination required between engineering, architecture and specialist conservation disciplines and Bethan’s role supports the communication of engineering proposals through drawings and technical information.
