Gemma is a heritage consultant and technical illustrator with wide-ranging experience of the analysis and survey of historic buildings.
Her work encompasses a wide range of projects, from individual heritage assessments to the analysis of wide areas such as conservation areas and large estates. Within London, Gemma’s projects include the Natural History Museum; Tate Britain; the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich; and large houses within Regent’s Park and Holland Park. She has particular experience in the history of railway infrastructure and has carried out projects within the Grade I listed Paddington Station, and assessed buildings and structures affected by the Crossrail and HS2 routes.
Beyond London, Gemma has assisted on a large number of projects including, Canterbury Cathedral Precint and the Temple Quarter area of Bristol. Based in the west country, with easy access to the cities of Bath and Bristol, in recent years she has undertaken several projects in Bristol including heritage advice for the former site of Bristol Zoo and writing a heritage statement for the extensive refurbishment of Bristol Beacon (the former Colston Hall). She has also helped advise on a number of projects within Temple Meads Station, as well as researching and illustrating the updated conservation strategy for Temple Meads Station and its wider heritage quarter.
A background in technical illustration and surveying gives Gemma a special insight into the evolution and design of buildings and their wider context, enabling her to interpret that understanding visually in clear, simple illustrations.
Gemma specialises in the use of GIS software to create georeferenced maps, diagrams and illustrations, which give a detailed understanding of wider topography; heritage designations and the Historic Environment Record, and which also allows for the creation of informative Zones of Theoretical Visibility models to inform historic characterisation studies. She pioneered the development of our easy-to-navigate, interactive documents, designed to be viewed digitally, and specialises in creating documents that are accessible for the visually impaired.
