Hugh works on historically significant and complex existing buildings, with a strong focus on Grade I listed structures and major public institutions.
His most prominent work has been at the Palace of Westminster, where he has provided structural engineering advice through our framework agreement. He has contributed to work at Westminster Hall, an eleventh-century structure of considerable historical and political importance, where he worked on repairing the historic timber hammerbeam roof, overseeing stone wall cleaning, refurbishing the roof lantern, and designing sensitive lighting installations. He has also advised on the refurbishment of the Speaker’s Residence, addressing essential maintenance whilst upgrading mechanical and electrical services, implementing fire safety measures, and restoring historic interiors to ensure the building remains suitable for its ceremonial function.
His commercial experience includes work at C. Hoare & Co’s private bank at 37 Fleet Street, where he collaborated with ADAM Architecture to assess existing structures and advise on the restoration of the Banking Hall, re-landscaping of the Garden Courtyard, and improvements to accessibility and environmental performance through new mechanical and electrical services.
Currently, Hugh is working on the Rayne Building at Darwin College, Cambridge, a £7 million. His involvement has been across RIBA stages 2-7, focusing on upgrading existing fabric to accommodate river-source heat pumps with underground plant rooms, and designing new extensions using low carbon materials to enhance circulation and accessibility throughout the building.
