Robert is a conservation advisor with a strong grounding in architectural history. His experience and interests encompass a wide variety of historic buildings and places.
Robert has a keen interest in successfully managing the change of historic buildings, having worked on a range of projects that include Grade I sites, University college buildings, bishops’ palaces, churches and theatres. He has provided heritage support for a wide range of museums and galleries including Young V&A at Bethnal Green and York Castle Museum and has expertise of historic houses with sensitive interiors such as Esher Place and Mentmore Towers. His experience and interests encompass a wide variety of historic buildings and places.
He has developed conservation plans and strategic studies for Grade I-listed sites including Auckland Castle, Highgate Cemetery, the Royal Albert Hall and the Guildhall, City of London. He has successfully supported Lottery-funded projects including Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel and Hartlebury Castle, Worcestershire. He has extensive experience of the detailed analysis of complex historic sites in support of proposals for major upgrades and new uses.
Projects of particular relevance include developing new use proposals for the redundant, Grade II* listed Clerkenwell Fire station and a long-running project to restore and upgrade a rare surviving pre-Fire of London group of terrace houses in St Giles’ Circus, London. This involved a close working relationship with the architects, and a careful understanding of their historical development and areas of relative heritage significance to justify a series of successful applications for listed building consent.
Reflecting our work enabling historic buildings to play a meaningful role in carbon reductions, he has developed a clear understanding of how energy efficiency can be significantly improved while preserving a listed building’s essential significance.
Robert studied History of Art at Bristol University and the Courtauld Institute of Art, where he has an MA in the History of Art with Distinction. Prior to joining our conservation team, he worked at the Soane Museum, SAVE Britain’s Heritage and the Euston Arch Trust.
