155 Commercial Street

155 Commercial Street

We worked with GPAD architects on the redevelopment of 155 Commercial Street, where our heritage input involved researching the site’s history to identify its heritage significance, and using this information to comment on GPAD’s proposed scheme.

The site lay within the Elder Street Conservation Area and consisted of three buildings dating from the 1850s, 1940s and 1970s, arranged around a central courtyard.

The project involved the refurbishment and extension of a 1970s office building that faces onto Commercial Street, and a programme of works to enlarge and better reveal the two historic industrial warehouses and a courtyard. No.155 was one of the few remaining properties on Commercial Street to retain its historic courtyard and industrial warehouses, which gave the rear of the site a strong sense of place, but which was concealed behind the later office building.

Having understood the rich but hidden history of the site, we were able to highlight the benefits that the architect’s scheme would bring in better revealing the areas of significance, as well as replacing the Commercial Street frontage with a building that was in keeping with the surrounding Conservation Area.

A series of proposals were successively granted planning permission between 2018 and 2023.
