City Churches Framework Conservation Plan
City Churches Framework Conservation Plan
The City of London has an exceptional density of churches, without parallel in the UK. They include medieval survivors and the celebrated group by Sir Christopher Wren. First and foremost places of worship, they also have broad historical significance.
We have worked over many years on projects relating to the City churches, individually and as a group. Our early work included a strategic survey of all the City churches, published in 1995. Jointly commissioned by the City of London Corporation, English Heritage and the Diocese of London, the report informed decisions over the future care and management of the churches as they faced an uncertain future.
In the intervening decades, we have a wealth of experience providing conservation advice on different aspects of refurbishment and repair at individual churches including St Andrew Undershaft, St Martin Ludgate and St Vedast Foster Lane. We also provided support for improvements to churchyards at St Botolph without Aldgate and St Peter upon Cornhill.
In 2024, we were appointed by the Diocese of London to build upon what remains valid from the 1995 report to produce a Framework Conservation Plan. Working alongside Matthew Lloyd Architects, the Plan responds to many of the challenges facing the City Churches, such as ageing post-war fabric, the climate change agenda and environmental sustainability, and the evolving nature of the City itself.
