East London House

East London House

We transformed this Grade II* listed pre-Georgian property in East London into a single-family home through local, low-key structural strengthening to achieve a refurbishment that is both sensitive and striking.

Working in collaboration with Chris Dyson Architects, our structural engineering work involved the demolition of a twentieth-century extension and the construction of a new two-storey element with polished concrete floors, large windows and rooflights to increase natural light within the house.

Within the original Georgian house, the main grand timber staircase (which was unstable and propped to prevent it from potential collapse) was jacked up and carefully strengthened following a detailed structural appraisal. This mitigated the need for any beams that would have had a significant impact on the visual appearance of a prominent feature within the house.

Various repairs were undertaken to the rest of the house as well as contemporary introductions, including a glazed panel between the new extension and original house that emphasises the relationship between contemporary and historic buildings, as well as a lightwell between the garden and lower ground with a small bridge link formed between the two. A function area was integrated within the ground floor with capacity for 100 guests.
